C.J. Schmidt practices primarily in the firm’s Litigation and Labor and Employment practice groups. C.J. has nearly 25 years of experience litigating corporate disputes and labor and employment matters before Ohio federal and state courts, the National Labor Relations Board, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, the EEOC, and arbitration panels. C.J. provides advice and counsel for businesses ranging from small family-owned business to health care organizations to Fortune 500 corporations regarding labor relations, employment disputes, anti-discrimination and leave policies (including FMLA, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act), and employee benefits issues. He has represented businesses in a wide variety of commercial disputes, including covenants-not-to-compete, breach of contract, and ERISA matters. C.J. also has extensive appellate experience.
Prior to joining Wood & Lamping, C.J. served as Labor Law Counsel for the United States Department of Commerce in Washington, DC. While living in Washington, he obtained an L.L.M. in Labor Law from the Georgetown University Law Center. He has been selected for inclusion on the Ohio Super Lawyers® list by Law & Politics magazine annually since 2010 and has an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review rating from Martindale Hubbell. He is licensed to practice in Ohio state and federal courts, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States Tax Court.
C.J. and his wife, Betsy, live in Hyde Park and have three grown children. C.J. serves on the Board of Advisors of the Goering Center for Family Business. C.J. serves as Secretary for the Craig and Frances Lindner Center of Hope. An avid golfer, C.J. is a native Cincinnatian and an alumnus of the University of Cincinnati.
